Experimental Silk Painting Workshop with Ellen Bakker
18 - 23 May 2025
We are excited to be hosting Ellen Bakker for an experimental silk painting workshop for this five day retreat The workshop explores the amazing possibilities that silk painting has to offer.
Creativity has been the keyword in Ellen's life from an early age. Born in 1960, Ellen took her first steps in her mother’s sewing and teaching studio. She was always busy with all sorts of leftover-fabrics and craft materials. After her studies at the art academy in Holland, Ellen started work as an independent graphic designer. Her current textile designs are an accumulation of her many years of experience in graphic design and her passion for textile art. The designs are characterised by a combination of graphical patterns, transparency and extraordinary colour schemes. Experimenting with colours, shapes, materials and techniques results in fabrics with unprecedented possibilities. The wealth of colours and shapes that surround her every day are a virtually inexhaustible source of inspiration for Ellen to create new designs. In more recent years, Ellen has turned her skills to helping others. She teaches in person and on-line from her studio in the Netherlands and has also worked as a guest tutor in her homeland as well as Canada, the USA and Germany. Ellen is an engaging and fun teacher who inspires and brings the best out of her students.
Discover the creativity in yourself and the surprising possibilities of experimental silk painting. During this workshop, you will spend five days working on the possibilities that silk painting offers. You can paint multiple silk scarves, paint silk fabric to make a garment or accessory, paint thin silk for felting, paint thicker silk for wall hangings, or make various samples. Each student has access to a large frame on which the silk is stretched. The workshop offers a great degree of freedom to experiment. You will learn what the effect is of working with various transparent layers, making the paint flow and how to stop the paint. You will be introduced to working with brushes, templates, stamps, and other tools. But above all, you will learn to intuitively fill the white silk with colour and shape. You do not need any experience to participate in this workshop. The workshop is above all fun and surprising.
